Are there new characters in Mario Kart Wii?

Rosalina, Dry Bowser, Baby Peach and Funky Kong are new characters (24 total characters). You can also play as your Mii once you've unlocked that ability.

Slightly dumb question from a non-gamer here -- what exactly is a Mii?

Oh sarah.... I even know that :) When you buy a Wii you can customize your own character to look like you. You can give it brown hair, put a flower behind your ear and even have your Mii wear a blue shirt.

I think you can also transport your Mii with you if you go play the Wii at someone elses how if you bring your own Wii-mote. Not sure about that one though. Maybe our resident gamer and Nintendo Wii expert ;) SkySkreamer can help you out with that one.

It's a blue dress, not a shirt BTW. That's kinda what I guessed the Mii was but I had to ask anyway. :P

Maybe I should start playing video games so I can play as Mii.

The green glasses in Jessica's picture were added from the Photo Channel on the Wii!
