What is more educational for a baby to watch Baby Einstein: Language Nursery DVD or Sesame Street on television?
Wow, that's an interesting question.
I suppose that you could compare it to the question; What is more healthy for a young child to eat, a microwave dinner or a or a box of chocolate covered cherries?
Maybe that's being a very little unfair to Sesame Street. Sesame street can be very fast paced and attention grabbing... [think of the animation where they are flying through an imaginary place singing 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 really fast (that song is still embedded into my mind)] It is actually too fast paced. The neurons in baby or young child's brain are still forming and as a result that kind of fast paced imagery basically wires a child's brain to be fast paced and unable to focus (aka ADHD).
For every hour of television a child under the age of 2 watches per day there is a 10% increased chance of that child getting ADHD. It's actually recommended that children two and under not be allowed to watch any television for this very reason. The fast paced nature of many of the animations in Sesame Street only increase that problem.
The baby einstein series is much, much slower paced. It is designed to hold baby and young children's attention, drawing interest, and helping to stimulate the brain in a healthy way. However, it is still a very poor replacement for actual attention from a parent or other real person. It also trains babies and young children to see Television as a source of attention and entertainment. A habit that can quickly become very difficult to break later on in life.
Which is better? Without a doubt, the baby einstein series! But, in this case "better" is a very relative term.
