Transcript of Featured Review

Michael and welcome to Laser light here on ExpoTV. The DVD up on the screen end up for review is Cars. Lightning McQueen is the fastest rookie on four wheels and he only cares about winning races and going fast. In fact he is only one race away from the championship but to get to that race you'll have to travel to California. Unfortunately on the way he becomes lost and ends up in the small town of Radiator Springs. Will he finds what it takes to become a champion there or will he not? Just take a look and see if we can find out. [Video clip playing] With the release of Cars I thought that perhaps Pixar had made it first mistake and release the picture that wasn't going to appeal to a broad audience. There's no absolutely no need to worry. Everyone from grandchildren to grandparents is absolutely going to love this film. Children are going to love Lightning McQueen and all the other cars racing around the track well adults are going to find the hidden car references sprinkled throughout this DVD to be equally entertaining. Now this DVD looks amazing. In fact you're going to swear that some of the Western landscapes were actually shot on film and not rendered on a computer. It looks that detailed. As for the sound I'm going to recommend that you crank this one up as loud as you can handle because during those race scenes your surround speakers and your subwoofer are going to get a tremendous workup. The voice talent on this DVD did a great job. Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy is two of the leads work well together and the rest of the cast does an excellent job. There are some extras on this DVD and their kind of divided down the middle some for children and some for the adults. Major in the goal slide and one man band up probably more geared for children while the Route 66 idea and the deleted scenes are probably more for adults. Also included is a THX optimizer which if you haven't run your system through you might wanna give a look. This DVD is rated G runs a 116 minutes and Dolby digital 5.1 and I'm going to give cars 5 stars. It's that good and I'm gonna go back and watch the rest of it now and I'll see you at my next review. Thank you

Summary
There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2 . There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars , at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas
