I want to be able to take wildlife shots without having to be right up close - how good is this camera for this type of shot as well as regular family, etc. shots?
It looks to me like you will need to get an additional lens along with the kit lens in order to accomplish both of your needs. For wildlife, it sounds like you would want at least a 200mm lens in order to be able to capture them from far away. For your family shots, however, the kit lens that I have, 18-135mm, would do a wonderful job for that and a multitude of other everyday uses.
The 18-135mm will never do you justice for wildlife photography. You will definitely need to buy another lens. In my experience, I would recommend you buy a 200mm or more. Better yet buy one with anti-vibration.
i would recommend getting another lense specifically for wildlife
