What's the depth of field like on the Nikon D40x?
I am not sure I understand the question, or the answer that you are looking for. The DoF is determined by the aperture set at time of exposure and the distance of the camera to the subject.
Do you want to know about the kit lens that comes with the D40, and are you interested in shallow DoF?
I was just wondering if the DoF was pretty good with this camera or would I probably need to add on a lens to get a shallower DoF?
I see. The short easy answer is that at f/3.5 with a relatively close subject you will blur out the background nicely. The f/5.6 spectrum of the lens is not wonderful but for the price it is more than adequate.
You can get a Nikkor f/1.8 50mm lens for about $100 which is a real bargain and a good lens for low light.
Honestly though at this point you are much better off with the Nikon D60 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm VR Lens. Its $200 more but its a much better camera as far as low noise is concerned. For in depth reviews goto www.dpreview.com
