Digital SLR vs. non Digital SLR Camera

darthvaderjawa posted on March 31, 2008 at 3:51 pm

I have a camera just like this but it's not digital. Is it worth it to go digital while still an SLR? Does an LCD screen and other digital features help picture taking easier or is it more steps in the process?

Digital photography is definitely more convenient than film. Getting instant feedback on the LCD screen makes it easier to tell if you've gotten the shot, and since there's no harm in taking lots of pictures and deleting the ones you don't need you can take more pictures and have a better chance of catching a great photo.

If you enjoy the manual features and flexibility of your current SLR, you can easily move to a digital SLR without much adjustment. You will also have the advantage of automatic point-and-shoot modes for when crafting a photo isn't as important.

The big downside to digital photography is the extra steps involved if you want prints of your photos, but it's becoming less of an issue as more and more options become available.

I agree with Melvil and add that if you have a camera "just like this", I'm assuming the non-digital Rebel XT, the lenses are interchangable. So, there's some money saved and you'll have familiar lenses to work with. Unless you develop your own film and are a die-hard film user, then step on over to digital. I think you'll enjoy it's vast versatility. Enjoy! Kirk

yes, the great thing about this digital SLR is that the lense are interchangable. i suggest the step to digital. you can take a lot more pictures as Melvil said and not worry about spending a lot of money on film. i had a friend who went to india/nepal for a period of 4 months and brought both film and digital cameras. he took 75% of his pictures with digital and found that out of 50 rolls of film he brought only used about 20...but he did use the film only for Black and White pictures. he doesnt trust BW digital conversion, which i would agree.

so i guess if you want to keep your non digi slr, find other uses for it. maybe BW film is better than BW digi or photoshop BW... i havent played around with film as much as digi. but yes, Melvil made a good point in everything he said.
