Pros: Great bohemian atmosphere; people and staff were friendly, hostel was very homey. Prepare to make friends!, Safe neighborhood, and the hostel itself was safe too. No one had anything stolen., Conveniently located across the street from the subway station.
Cons: Hostel could use some fresh paint and newer furniture., There were not enough bathrooms., Many steps to climb, no elevators. Those with heavy suitcases should get a room on the second floor!
A perfect hostel for those traveling on a budget in Washington DC. Prices are as low as $22 a night. Easy to find on the already simple-to-navigate Washington DC metro. Just hop onto the red line heading towards Glenmont; get off at the Takoma Park metro station and you're there! Neighborhood is very safe, with a 7-11 across the street and a great organic supermarket within walking distance. Plenty of space to store your luggage, with *free* lockers available for your valuables. Fully equipped kitchen with a fridge at your disposal so you don't have to eat out all the time. Free internet, cable television, linens, pillows, towels. An overall great atmosphere; not your typical hostel! You really do get the most amenities for your money there. However, to stay there, you must be over 18 years of age and be prepared to stay in mixed (male and female) bedrooms. There are single rooms available for about $40. Personally, after staying at Hilltop, I would never waste money on an expensive hotel room when visiting DC.
