Pretty much the same game (with some new characters/courses) but now it's on a handheld and has Nintendo WFC capabilities.
I disagree with skyscreamer. There are differences that can be a make it or break it for you. First of all, the DS has no analog so that already changes the gameplay a bit. The controls are not as harsh as on the N64. Its a bit easier to control, which makes powerboosts quite easy to do on straight roads. Some of the courses from the SNES, GBA, N64 and Gamecube are on the DS version. The double screen makes it convenient for the map view. That's all I can think of now. :)
Tygerstyle is right. It is largely the same game, but the control and subtle differences make it a slightly different experience. Overall, if you liked the other ones, Mario Kart DS will probably be a good purchase.
After having played it for awhile i'd have to say that it is different in many respects.
MK DS has much more variety and styles of play with the added characters, levels, and karts. It has a much better look and not as blocky of a feel. The added retro cup really gives it some added value.
If you are interested in playing online you may as well forget the old fun and gun style as the majority of the time the it's not about getting good items and riding well, but rather more about how often and how well you can powerslide through the straightaways (and everywhere else for that matter). I gave up on online play after a few weeks due to these issues.
In many respects MK DS is a much more strict racing game than the others in the series, not that it ever gets to the point of being a strict racer.
