Is the quality of the video recording straight to DVD any better than if you recorded to MiniDV?

MiniDV is higher quality but a little difficult to handle after your done recording. If you want to save to a DVD you have to transfer, convert, and burn. With the mini DVD camcorders you can go straight from the disc being recorded on and place it in the DVD player.
