LCD over plasma?

daphnekh posted on March 27, 2008 at 11:22 am

I love the price of the Vizio...but did anyone who bought this wish they went with a plasma screen over an LCD? Did anyone make that specific decision?

The Vizio is great. That is if you have something like direct tv that offers a lot of HD programming. If you are not yet with a company who offers many HD channels, you probably aren't going to be extremely happy with the picture quality. The Vizio is great for the price, and if you have a lot of HD channels I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Short Answer:
You're not going to find a plasma that's only 32" and plasma is always more expensive than a comparable LCD.

Long Answer:
Plasma is in almost all cases better than LCD. The color is more vibrant and the blacks are truer ("black" parts of most LCDs are a very dark gray, except on very high-end models).

However, plasmas usually only come in screen sizes of 42 inches diagonally and larger. Additionally, from what I've seen, plasmas are at least $200 more than a similarly sized LCD.

You're not going to find a plasma for a Vizio price or in the 32-inch size.

Unless you want a TV that's 42" or larger and are willing to pay at least $1,200, you're going to want to go with an LCD.

If you want a cheap 32" LCD TV, Vizio is a good entry-level brand to go with; over the 8 months I've had mine it's been great, especially considering the price.

If you want a large TV 42 inches and above I would go with a plasma since plasma has a higher contrast ratio so it has better color than LCD but if you want a small TV your only choice is LCD so I would go with that one

Boy, great answers! Thanks! It's amazing how you all kind of agreed! Makes me feel a lot more confident in getting the smaller LCD, since even at a great price it's a lot of money. Thanks again!

This same brand Vizio 32in plasma is only $40 more. I have priced both of them. Pretty unbelievable.

at this point in time, I think plasma is a better choice because of the price point and viewing angle. However, in the future LCD will definitely overtake plasma (OLED technology, etc).

we're getting a plasma since my husband preferes the way it looks. although, with an ELD, there is no glare.
