With the exception of some subtle humming from time to time, this is a great external firewire disk.

This is the big disk extreme by Lacie. Now this is the 500 GB model. The smaller models, which are, I think go up to maybe 250 or 300 Gigabytes. They are about half the size and the reason is that this 500 Gigabyte model actually has two hard drives in here that are set up as a ray and so it looks like one drive but there's actually two. This is been obviously if you can see it's very nice looking. It's pretty heavy and so it feels very solid. There are little feet here that you stick on and so you can stick it on its side like this if you want. Personally I like standing it up and they give you a little stand here that you can attach at the bottom. The main reason I like standing it up is because I think that it gives more air dissipation or the heat just dissipates easier because there's more places to dissipate and if you stand it on its side or flat then the heat can't escape from the bottom only from the top. This is the extreme model and what that means is it has a triple interface; it's a triple interface one. What you have is you have a Firewire port here, Firewire 400, and then you have two Firewire 800 here. It doesn't have, actually it's not a triple interface I'm sorry it only has two interfaces, it's Firewire. So if you are looking for USB you want to get the triple interface version. There's the power right here. The power cord plugs in here and the power button is up at the front. When you turn it on it turns blue, which looks nice and overall I mean it's a good drive. I mean it's been good for me so far. I've had it for about a half a year. The only thing that I want -- the only complaint I have about it is that there tends to be a little high pitch whine from time to time. And it may be the connection to my computer through the Firewire, I'm not sure, but it's a little bit annoying. And if you hear whining you turn it off, you'll notice it's gone. So you know if you get this and you hear that, then it's probably this. Aside from that it's been great for me. I've backed up my, my, mainly my photos on to it but also my music and my movies and it's, you know, 500 Gigabytes is enough for now, but I think I'll need to get more later.
