Nintendo Wii good for fitness?

treerangerone posted on April 01, 2008 at 1:25 pm

I was wondering if the Nintendo Wii's interactive controllers/motion features help people get in shape or does it just depend on the game?

My entire family would have to agree and say yes. In fact there have been news stories about elderly care centers using the Wii to give senors a fun reason to get up and move around a bit. A majority of Wii games give your body a work out. Of course some of that depends on how much effort you want to put forward as well. We also feel that games today help hand eye coordination. A perfect example of this would be Guitar Hero.

I've heard of some people getting in shape like that. Maybe if you played WiiSports tennis or something.

A game called WiiFit is coming out May 19 and it's obviously meant for this. I suggest picking that up when it comes out.

It's definetly not a sit on your butt and play kind of game - at least Wii Sports isn't. I can say that after boxing a few round and then playing baseball I was a little sore the next day! I don't know that you should expect to lose weight by playing but at least you are active. I'm anxious to see what the new WiiFit is all about when it comes out.

The fact that the Wii keeps you active is one of the main reasons we bought it. It does depend on the game being played as to how actively you are moving. Some games like Wii Sports has tennis, bowling, baseball and boxing. I find the boxing to be the best "workout", but I wouldn't count on losing weight with it. At least it gets us up and off the couch though!

The boxing actually gives you a pretty good workout. I don't think the other ones are a great workout, but it is sooo much better than just sitting on the couch pushing buttons. WiFit looks like it will be a very fun and effective workout, can't wait for that one.

First of all the Wii has a game called Wii Fit, which is essentially an interactive workout/excersise DVD. It develops core body strength, and balance. It feature alot of yogaish excersises and moves.

Also, like any game, the Wii heavily develops your hand-eye coordination and motor memory, due to the motion sensors.

I wouldn't call it a fitness program but several of the games get you moving. I know my arms have been tired and my heart was racing after playing some of the games. Anytime you get moving and increase your heart rate, you're doing something good for your body. If you are a fairly inactive person, you may lose a bit of weight but I wouldn't depend on it for long term fitness and training.

it depends on the person and somewhat the game.you can easily sit on your ass and just flick your wrist. Or you can really get into it.

It depends. The sports games do get you moving and I think those are great. They could totally be a little mini workout. Wii Fit is coming out and that should be interesting too. Mario Party 8, not so much a workout. Depends on the game really!

It completely depends on the game. The sports games keep you up and moving, but other games (like MySims) involve virtually no movement at all.
