Hi I'm Liz and I'm here to talk to you about This Film is not yet Rated which is a documentary directed by Kirby Dick it is 1 hour and 30 minutes along and it is rated NC 17 because it depicts some graphic sex scenes from NC 17 rated movies but that's not essential part of the documentaries it's not something that I personally think that this is something that's a little more appropriate than NC17 probably something I think that you'll feel comfortable if your older teenagers are watching. Here's my opinion. There's no question that a lot of the things we experience everyday are regulated by large groups of people that we don't really know or understand their particular standards or choosing what we decide to eat or drink or play with or watch but the ratings board the Motion Pictures Association is a particularly interesting group. No one really knows who they are until now this documentary actually exposes some of the people who work for the MPAA ratings board and that although that's kind of essential to the film and to films appeal there's a lot more to it. It just sort of a much more than the expose otherwise simply part of it has a lot of testimonials from directors who have dealt with the ratings board big time directors a lot of them although not necessarily commercial directors. Like you're not gonna see Steven Spielberg on this but you are gonna see Kevin Smith and you're gonna see John Waters and you're gonna see directors maybe director's faces you don't know but directors who directed movies like Boys Don't Cry American Psycho sa lot of controversial movies who had to deal with a bunch of people who they didn't know a bunch of people no one knows. Anonymous people gathering in a room and determining what the film should be rated based on nothing basically; we don't know and based on their opinion. And in the course of this documentary it comes out not only you know who these people are demographically but also the fact that there are two members of the clergy on the appeals board for the ratings conglomerate and the appeals boards based whom you go to if you believe if the rating that you felt has been given is not fair you can make an appeal. This appeal has two members the cordials who will not identify themselves and no one from the rating board from the appeals board of the system will identify themselves. And all of this is exposed in this documentary and I think it's something that really needs to get out there more because it's a major part of film industry and it's kept entirely secret. They say to protect the film raters from influence and yet they are freely allowed to associate with studio executives which seem like to be the people that will most likely to influence them in a negative way. And it's just a fascination look into this censorship which is really what it is although it definitely disguises itself to something else and it's absolutely fascinating this documentary needs to be seen. It's particularly been interesting to artists and film makers but you need to be seen by regular people too because we all go to the movies and I think it's important for people to know what's going on so This Film is not yet Rated fantastic documentary you definitely check it out.

Summary
As it turns out, Kirby Dick's eye-opening documentary isn't rated. When he submitted it to the Motion Picture Association of America, they slapped it with an NC-17 (though he had always intended to release it unrated). This is fitting since he sheds much-needed light on the inner workings of a secretive organization that wields great power over the movies the public gets to see (since most mainstream media won't touch the dreaded NC-17). It's just as well since This Film Is Not Yet Rated focuses on the more controversial films of the past three decades. Aside from the stories of filmmakers who have tussled with the MPAA, Dick hires a private investigator to determine who sits on the board, since this information isn't in the public domain. With her assistance, he solves the mystery. Directors include Darren Aronofsky ( Requiem for a Dream ), Mary Harron ( American Psycho ), and Kimberly Peirce ( Boys Don't Cry ). Though frequently humorous, This Film Is Not Yet Rated should be required viewing for serious film fans, because the MPAA doesn't just affect what gets seen--but what gets made. If it has a flaw, it's this: In his attempt to generate transparency, Dick ( Twist of Faith ) arguably crosses the line. It's one thing to identify the board members; it's another to divulge their vital statistics. Whether or not these "guardians of morality" are working for the common good, they're still entitled to a little privacy. That said, this is vital stuff for anyone concerned about First Amendment issues. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
