Hey it's the JMG again. I'm reviewing 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days. This is a Romanian film. It won the Golden Palm at this year's Cannes Film Festival. I had the opportunity to see the film at the Telluride Film Festival this summer. This is a typical arthouse film. It's a character-driven story about a woman who wants to get an abortion and her friend assisted her in finding a street doctor to perform the abortion. In Romania it's illegal to get abortions so if a woman wants to do this they have to take care of it on their own terms. This is a very political film in the message and it brings up questions of freedom of choice and so on. To be honest with you I did not like this film. I liked the style. It's handheld a lot of long takes. The camera just sits there and you really feel like you become a part of the environment but I didn't like the way the story unravels. I think they focused on the lead character's friend more than herself. I think the film is drawn out as well. There are some really intense scenes and the performances were moving but at the end of the film the story just really had a lot of potential but went south in a hurry so I would not recommend this film. I actually only recommend this film for people who like The Trilogy of Red Blue and White by Kieslowski. I think this is up their alley but everybody else skip it. Go see something else. Peace
