Animal Crackers needs some help

Even the poor transfer of this movie cant dim the hilarity of the Marx brothers. They get a five the dvd gets a two.

Hello I'm Michael and welcome to Laserlight here on Expo TV. The DVD up on the screen and up for review is Animal Crackers. Animal Crackers has a very basic story line. It seems there is a stolen and Let's take a look. [Background video clip playing]. Animal Crackers was released in 1930. It runs about 97 minutes. It's black and white and a four by three aspect ratio with mono sound. There absolutely no extras on this disk and I'll be the first to say that this disk could have used an extensive restoration. There is films scratch throughout. There is bad contrast ratio. Some of the scenes are very soft and focused. There's missing audio a few scenes are clipped as if frames were missing from the original film. All in all a very poor release of this great film. Now I had this film been restored it still would have made the Marx's brothers any funnier Groucho Harpo Chico and Zeppo the straight man were just hilarious in this movie and this movie is also part musical which may throw it off for some younger viewers who haven't seen it before but for an older guy like me I just find the Marx's brothers to be simply hilarious.. The poker scene with Chico and Harpo and Margarent Dumont is a classic and can be watched again and again and it will continue to make you laugh. As I said this movie could have used an extensive restoration and as such I'm going to rate this DVD only two stars. Had it been restored I would have given it a full five but because it is a very poor quality copy I can only give it two stars. I'm gonna go watch the rest of it because I still find the Marx's brothers to be hilarious and I'll see you at my next review.

Summary

This second Marx Brothers classic has Groucho playing Captain Spaulding (an inside joke pertaining to a renowned Hollywood drug pusher), whose song "Hooray for Captain Spaulding" became his signature anthem. Despite its staginess, it has some hilarious gags as the boys try to solve the mystery of a stolen painting among the high-society crowd. Some of the highlights include Groucho's African lecture about shooting an elephant in his pajamas, and a wacky card game between Harpo, Chico, and the always-gullible Margaret Dumont. The musical interludes here don't seem as awkward as in later films. It's really quite charming watching Chico and Harpo show off their graceful talents. --Bill Desowitz
