Mr Smith Goes to Washington

Reviewed on 11/30/07       Plays: 11

Political heavyweights decide that Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), an obscure scoutmaster in a small town, would be the perfect dupe to fill a vacant U.S. Senate chair. Surely this naive bumpkin can be easily controlled by the senior senator (Claude Rains) from his state, a respectable and corrupted career politician. Director Frank Capra fills the movie with Smith's wide-eyed wonder at the glories of Washington.

Hi Shannon here. I'm gonna do for you a review of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. This has Jean Arthur and Jimmy James Stewart it says but Jimmy Stewart is how we know him usually. This movie was done in 1939; black and white. So it's pretty old; older than my parents This movie is fantastic. It really I think everybody should watch this movie. Jimmy Stewart's character goes to he's appointed to a post in Washington. He's a senator small town town; and he's appointed to a post in Washington. He gets there to find that these politicians are you know they're ruthless and really they're kind of out to destroy him. Kind of reminds me of politics today. We see the shiny faces and they seem so great on the outside. But you know they have to work pretty hard to get where they're at and they have to fight pretty hard to stay where they're at. All it takes is so much you scratch my back I'll scratch yours . And so this is what Mr. Smith (right here Jimmy Stewart's character) is finding out. He is in it for the ideals because he's a good person. He's what we call a statesman; not too many of those left. So this is a scene where he is speaking to the public for the first time. He's a little bit nervous. It just gives you a glimpse of his character in this movie. [movie clip playing] All right let me just pause it there or stop it. But as you can see that was just a look into Jimmy Stewart's character in this movie. He plays this role magnificently. It's very good; and I think it holds very true today the way the politics are in Washington. I give it a definite five out of five stars. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

Summary
Political heavyweights decide that Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), an obscure scoutmaster in a small town, would be the perfect dupe to fill a vacant U.S. Senate chair. Surely this naive bumpkin can be easily controlled by the senior senator (Claude Rains) from his state, a respectable and corrupted career politician. Director Frank Capra fills the movie with Smith's wide-eyed wonder at the glories of Washington, all of which ring false for his cynical secretary (Jean Arthur), who doesn't believe for a minute this rube could be for real. But he is. Capra was repeating the formula of a previous film, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town , but this one is even sharper; Stewart and Arthur are brilliant, and the former cowboy star Harry Carey lends a warm presence to the role of the vice president. Bright, funny, and beautifully paced, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is Capra's ode to the power of innocence--an idea so potent that present-day audiences may find themselves wishing for a new Mr. Smith in Congress. The 1939 Congress was none too thrilled about the film's depiction of their august body, denouncing it as a caricature; but even today, Capra's jibes about vested interests and political machines look as accurate as ever. --Robert Horton
