    Transcript of Video Review

Hi there. My name is Greg and I will be reviewing the movie Waiting for Guffman. Now, this is a very um—this is a mocumentary and at first glance you probably haven’t even heard of this movie. And, if you saw it on the shelf it’s very odd. 00:00:034.000 The director is Christopher Guest and um he has always been a big fan of mine for his mocumentary movies that he’s made. There always really good and very funny. This however, is my favorite movie of his, Waiting for Guthman and it features a small town which is holding an um anniversary play for the anniversary of their town Blaine, Missouri. I mean from the cover it doesn’t really look like a movie that you’d want to check out or assume interest in but, um it’s made by a favorite director of mine who um did other things such as um This is (undecipherable) Best in Show and more recently um A Mighty Wind. And, basically it’s them getting set up and prepared for this big play that they’re going to have and they invite Guffman, Moritz Guffman and he’s coming to attend their production and they’re hoping to get into Broadway you know and get to New York and make it big. And, it’s just it’s a whole lot of fun because it’s a local town and you know they don’t always have the best production and actors it’s a community theater. And it’s really a lot of fun especially if you’re in theater. If your in the theater um, community theater or any--if you’ve ever acted before this is--it hits close to home and it’s very good. Um, it’s very very funny and the actual performance itself which they show is very good. On the actual DVD itself there are a um selection of deleted scenes as well as commentary. The commentary was kind of boring but, it gets the job done. There a few um, interesting little facts such as the fact that most of this all of it actually was improvised which is quite shocking. Um, the um, DVD case of this is nothing special. I’m not a big fan of the um, snap cases and inside you have your chapter breaks and your actual discs. Um, my family absolutely loves this film. We watch this all the time and it never gets old. Everyone we’ve shown this to loves it. I can’t give this enough high marks. It’s so funny it’s one of those um, gems that you’ve probably never heard of but you need to check it out Waiting for Guffman 5 out of 5. One of the best comedy movies I’ve ever seen. It’s hilarious. You’ve got to rent this. You’ve got to see this. Rent it. Buy it. You should see it.

    Summary
One of the funniest films in many a moon was hiding at art house theaters in 1998. Former Saturday Night Live comedian and Spinal Tap member Christopher Guest creates the ultimate parody of small-town dramatics, Waiting for Guffman . Corky St. Claire (Guest), an overwhelming drama director hiding out in Blaine, Missouri, thinks he has found the vehicle to put him back on Broadway: the city's 150th anniversary play, Red, White, and Blaine. As rehearsals start, we learn of the town's history ("the stool capital of the world") including a brush with a UFO. The mockumentary follows the various townsfolk wishing for stardom: Parker Posey as a Dairy Queen clerk, Catherine O'Hara and Fred Willard as stage-struck travel agents, Matthew Keeslar as the town's bad boy, and Eugene Levy (who cowrote the film with Guest) as a dentist who dreams of glory on the stage. The film is a hoot from beginning to end, and be sure to watch the closing credits. Fans of Guest's deft dry humor should not miss his other parody of the entertainment world, The Big Picture (Kevin Bacon as a student filmmaker who goes to Hollywood). --Doug Thomas
