You do need to plug it into a computer running iTunes at least once. iTunes is completely benevolent and will not give your computer a virus. It does try to install Safari and Quicktime on Windows machines, but that can be avoided in the install procedure.
However, after the first sync you can use the iTunes store over wifi on the iPod to get applications and music onto it. If you use the wall charger, you would never have to plug it into a computer again.
